Character Name: Al Calavicci
Series: Quantum Leap
Point in canon: Post-Series (2004/2005)
Character Background and Personality: Al Calavicci is a man of the world, put simply. If you can name it, he's probably been there and done it.
Spending much of his turbulent youth in and out of the orphanage, Al found adventure (and trouble) around every corner, gaining plenty of experience and quite a reputation with the ladies. This persisted, though he eventually wound up trading some of his mischievous nature for a Naval uniform, a healthy appreciation for flying, and the opportunity to prove he was more just a troublemaker from the inner city.
Al proved himself consistently. His early military career was filled with examples of his ambition, which included his participation with NASA and the early days of the Space Program, as well as being chosen to fly over Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis.
In 1963, Calavicci married his first wife, Beth (a Navel nurse and the love of his life,) but their careers didn't allow them to spend much time together. By 1967 they had spent less than two years together, straining their relationship almost to its limit. Matters only worsened when Calavicci's plane was shot down over Vietnam. His status changed to MIA and Beth eventually had him declared "deceased" and remarried.
In Vietnam, Al was passed from one POW camp to the next, surviving through torture, parasites and several escapes that always ended in recapture. When Al was finally repatriated in 1975 (alternately 1973 before Sam changed his personal history,) he found the loss of Beth coupled with his disillusionment with the United States government to be too much and turned to reckless behavior.
Despite a growing drinking problem, Calavicci managed to raise the ranks and excel within career with the Navy. By the 1980's he was awarded his admiralty, a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT, and was provided directorship for some of the government's most top secret projects, most notably to that date, the Starbright Project. It is during Starbright, a pivotal and turbulent time in Al's life, that he meets Dr. Sam Beckett, a doe-eyed and optimistic genius with an inherit need to help everyone everywhere.
With Calavicci blowing through wives and alcohol at a record rate, he gained the attention of the often-doting Beckett, already on a mission to save the rest of the world. What's one more person to a guy like that? Reluctantly, Al conceded to help and he and Sam became fast friends, eventually leading them to come together after Starbright for Project Quantum Leap, a time travel experiment based on Beckett's theories.
Working as a team, Sam and Al convinced the government of the usefulness of the technology they were proposing, and after several years of research, development, and begging, they found themselves on the cusp of the millennium and completion.
In 1999, after pressure from their government funders to provide results, Al's best (and by now long-time) friend, Beckett, stepped into the Quantum Leap Accelerator and vanished into time before Al or anyone from Project Quantum Leap could stop him. Just like that, Sam was gone, leaving behind a living body that exhibited no brain activity.
Contact was established when it's found that Sam had indeed time traveled within his own lifetime, but instead of occupying his own body, was trapped within the body of another individual. Conversely, the displaced individual found themselves trapped in Beckett's body in the future with no memory of how they arrived there. Retrieving Beckett proved ineffective, and Al became a vital portion of Project Quantum Leap as a holographic "Observer" that could communicate with Sam through time.
Feeling responsible for Sam's disappearance, Calavicci remained with the Project as Director and Observer. Over time, with the help of the parallel-hybrid computer (affectionately and sometimes un-affectionately dubbed "Ziggy") and key Project personnel, Sam and Al learn that Sam's Leaps are mission-based, though they attribute the randomness of where and when to "God, Fate, Time or Whatever."
Working in the secret installation in New Mexico, Al and Sam spend more than five years in limited contact attempting to unravel the mystery. During this time Al held out hope that his best friend would return and used every bit of clout he had to keep the Project running.
In 2004, after countless Leaps, but no success bringing Beckett home, the Project lost contact with the time traveler. Unable to reestablish communications or locate Sam, those left at the Project were forced to cut their already thin staff to maintain enough funds to continue their search for Beckett under the guise of research.
When Al arrives at the city, it will be well over a year since he last communicated with Dr. Sam Beckett.
Despite his shortcomings and obvious struggles, Al invented himself as a loyal and devoted friend with a taste for loud clothes, pretty women, cigars, and any adventure that might come his way. Due to this fact, expect that he will be extremely interested in spending some time "studying his environment," especially when he realizes exactly what he's charged to do.
Sexual Orientation: Straight. Al's been married five times and is knownuniversally for his womanizing ways.
Sample Post:
Opening his eyes didn't seem to be an immediate option. The bright overhead lights were like hot knives to his corneas and did nothing for the throbbing ache emanating from the base of his skull. Just how drunk had he gotten last night?
Al Calavicci groaned and rubbed at his eyes until they felt like they weren't going to boil out of his head, realizing almost immediately that something was amiss. For starters, he hadn't been drinking last night, and he most certainly hadn't gone to sleep in a... a hospital gown? His face distorted in displeasure. He'd woken up in more than his share of hospital gowns and they were never stylish. You've really done it this time, pal, he thought, whatever "it" is.
As if the fact that his memory was blank on the subject of his arrival in this place wasn't startling enough, a voice invaded his thoughts while he tried to process whether he (and most importantly, his body) were still in one piece. "Exciting and stimulating exercises?" He repeated to the emptiness of the room, suspicious of what exactly that entailed. "Hey, c'mon, I didn't sign up for this!"
He was on his feet immediately searching out signs of his captors' identities; Al was far too used to the feeling of captivity to want to wait around to find out on their terms. Conveniently enough, he didn't have to look far. The laptop the voice had mentioned was sitting open, blinking in wait for a prompt. Maybe it had been the source of the mysterious (but helpful) voice? He didn't think so, but it helped him swallow the absurdity of the situation so he believed it anyway.
Feeling ridiculously exposed, Calavicci searched around for something that would give him better coverage, both pleased and disturbed to find a bag of his own clothing and a few person objects in the corner. Didn't that suggest his trip had been planned?
Changing into his own clothes felt blissful and he tried his best to not bemoan the fact that he only had a few options and none of them would interchange well. It was a downside, sure, but not nearly as inconvenient as having nothing at all.
Now fully clothed, Al felt more... complete. And much more willing to tackle the task of figuring out the where-why-and-how of the situation.
"Show me your secrets," he commanded, and poked inexpertly at the laptop. Parallel-hybrid computer it was not, but it proved helpful in its own way by revealing that the whole point of his visit was to...
His eyes widened and he forced himself to read it once, twice, three times more before he allowed himself to believe it. "So, it's a sex experiment," he translated to no one in particular, wiggling his bushy eyebrows provocatively. Not able to resist the urge, Al closed the lid on the laptop and smoothed his lapels like a preening peacock. "Guess that's why they chose me."
Calavicci's last thoughts before stepping out the door and explore were settled partially on how glad he was that his headache had receded, but mostly on how fortunate he suddenly found himself (dream, coma, hallucination, reality or not) that someone had thought to pack his silver shoes. He couldn't miss in those.
